The introductory Level 1 begins with major events in the history of California wine.
As a Level 1 candidate, you will learn how California’s geography, the Pacific Ocean and mountain ranges affect viticulture and wine styles. You will also acquire fundamental knowledge of grape-growing practices and the specifics of viticulture compared to other agriculture, including the ability to identify and describe the important grape varieties grown in California.
The Level 1 online course consists of several chapters covering history, lore, geography, climate, soils, grapes, viticulture, vinification, ageing and maturation, wine laws, official classifications, producers, vintages, and the business of wine. Candidates will have around two months to complete the theory and to take the exam before the tasting at the end of May.
The learning time is 6 hours for Level 1

- Explore California’s iconic wineries, such as Ridge Vineyards, Frog’s Leap Winery and Robert Mondavi Winery.
